Old School Runescape, the proudly antiquated version of Runescape that still looks and performs like the game I sank countless hours in to when I actually should've been studying, is getting a raid. Its next raid, as it happens: The Theatre of Blood. A fantastic raid requires good rewards, so when the Theatre of Blood was declared late last year, players were anxious to see exactly what clearing the multi-man challenge could earn them. Jagex reacted with Justicar armor, a brand new best-in-slot armor set (above). There was one little problem: gamers absolutely hated it.They memed on it so hard that Jagex is now completely changing the armor's design. Almost all of Old School Runescape's updates undergo participant polls, but this is the first time a suit of armor has been forged in a passion of memes.
The irony is that while gamers loathed the'final' armor shown earlier this season, they adored the prototypes shown when the raid was announced. Initially, the Justicar armor was bulkier and part of a trio of armor sets, West informs me, but as the Theatre of Blood moved from obscure concept to actual content, the armor changed with it. Players said there was sufficient DPS equipment but not enough tank equipment, so it was narrowed down to only 1 armor collection. And if they were just going to use one group, Jagex figured they might also create a new one based on the armor worn with the raid's big bad.
"We thought changing it a little made sense," West says,"but players weren't quite on board with all the first proposal we shared on stream.
